About The Rooftop Bar

Named the #1 Resort Hotel in the U.S. and California by the Travel + Leisure’s
2024 World's Best Awards, Mission Pacific Beach Resort in Oceanside, California, blends modern luxury with laid-back coastal charm. At its heart is The Rooftop Bar, where guests enjoy craft cocktails and panoramic views over the Pacific Ocean.

The Audio Challenge

Following a recent renovation, The Rooftop Bar sought to upgrade its audio system in the main bar area ahead of an upcoming event. Management wanted to improve sound quality while preserving the bar’s new sophisticated design.

“From the beginning, we knew audio wasn’t just a utility, it was a pillar in shaping the guest journey,” says Duane Holder, General Manager of The Rooftop Bar. “The sound needed to enhance, not overpower.”

Featuring a vaulted wood ceiling and a large woven light fixture above the bar, the audio solution needed to be sonically powerful yet fit in visually with the upscale atmosphere. Conventional speaker options clashed with the refined coastal design, prompting the team to seek a custom-built solution.

the solution

Mission Pacific turned to Essential Communications, led by David Schwartz, for a custom, high-fidelity solution. Drawing from prior success with James Loudspeaker, Schwartz worked closely with their team to engineer a bespoke solution tailored to The Rooftop Bar.

“I had a concept for the space, and I knew James Loudspeakers could deliver on it,” says David Schwartz, owner of Essential Communications. “James's customization capabilities would allow us to fulfill our vision without compromising on either sound or visuals.”

The design utilized James Loudspeaker’s Maverick Series, typically used in ultra-high-output home theater environments. Its exceptional fidelity and flexibility made it the ideal platform for this boutique hospitality venue.

To meet the bar’s aesthetic standards, James crafted custom enclosures finished in a bamboo-inspired veneer, carefully matched to the surrounding materials. A veneer swatch book was even provided so the resort’s design team could select the perfect finish.

The collaboration included an on-site design session at James’s Minden, Nevada headquarters, where Schwartz and the engineering team fine-tuned acoustic performance and visual details, ensuring everything was optimized before
installation.

“James Loudspeaker was a true partner. The level of service I could offer my client was a direct result of how deeply James supported the project.”

RESULTS

Installed ahead of a party at The Rooftop Bar, the new system includes loudspeakers and subwoofers mounted symmetrically on both sides of the bar. The subwoofer and loudspeaker cabinets were matched in width to reinforce a clean, handcrafted aesthetic. Unlike off-the-shelf alternatives, every component of this system was purpose-built for The Rooftop Bar – from the cabinet dimensions to material finishes to custom bracketry.

“The custom audio solution here is subtle, powerful, and intentionally integrated into the architecture. It’s seamless, and that’s the point. Guests feel it before they consciously register it,” says Holder.

The audio system enhances the guest experience while supporting conversation, connection, and ambiance. The warm bamboo finishes of the speakers complement the bar’s wood ceiling, natural textures, and ambient lighting, creating a harmonious atmosphere that invites guests to linger.

“The right audio changes everything. It shapes tempo and flow, fuels connection, and elevates the overall atmosphere. We’ve noticed guests linger longer, spend more, and return more often, all subtle outcomes of a space that simply feels right.”

Conclusion

This project showcases the strength of creative collaboration between Mission Pacific Beach Resort, Essential Communications, and James Loudspeaker. From concept to completion, the partnership produced an audio experience that matches the visual beauty of the venue and elevates it even further.

“We’re proud of what we’ve created at The Rooftop Bar,” concluded Holder. “It’s become a cornerstone of Oceanside’s cultural revival, and the audio experience is central to its identity.”
